The Minefield of Self Employed Health Insurance

Monday, July 28th, 2003

You would have thought that it wouldn t be that difficult to get reasonably affordable self employed health insurance but unfortunately many self employed workers are finding that they are being priced out of the health insurance market.

For those who are employed and get health insurance as part of their overall employment package premiums and deductibles are better controlled through volume discounts and the strong negotiating position of major employers. However, with self employed health insurance there appears to be little incentive for health insurance providers to offer a fair deal.

An increasing number of self employed individuals are finding it almost impossible to find affordable health insurance and when they do it is more and more apparent that insurance providers are out for short term gain and are pricing self employed health insurance out of the market after the first year of insurance which is a period when it s almost impossible to claim due to the pre-existing condition cla (more...)

Additional Coverage for Your Medicines and Remedies

Monday, July 28th, 2003

Many people feel that if they have adequate health insurance, they should not have to worry about additional coverage for their medicines and remedies, and in a perfect world, they would not have to worry about their medicines and remedies however, this is not a perfect world, and sometimes even an adequate health insurance policy is not enough for some people to cover the costs of medicines and remedies, or does not cover enough of the medicines and remedies for the cost to be affordable for the health insurance policyholder.

This is where prescription drug expense insurance policies can come in handy. Prescription drug expense insurance policies are actually supplemental insurance policies they are not connected in any way to your current health insurance policy. A prescription drug expense insurance policy can pick up the cost where your health insurance policy stops paying this is helpful if your health insurance policy seems to stop paying before it should.

For example, if you are pre (more...)

Types Of Health Insurance

Sunday, July 27th, 2003

Health insurance is an important part of your financial planning. A minor illness or injury can set you back a bit, but a major illness or injury can devastate you financially now and into the future. Carrying adequate health insurance gives you peace of mind. There are a variety of different types of health insurance plans you can buy. Each plan offers a different style of coverage. Each plan has a basic premium but there may be other costs depending on your family s health and your medical history.

Two health plans that you hear a lot about are managed care and indemnity plans. They are significantly different in their basic approach to health care but broadly speaking the major difference involves choices. Managed care plans have pre-existing service contracts that they have entered into with specific hospitals, health care providers, and doctors. A managed care plan will mean less paper work for you and much lower out of pocket expenses. There are 3 types of managed care programs available.

Critical Criticism

Sunday, July 27th, 2003

Critical illness insurance is designed to pay out a lump sum if you are unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with one of a list of medical conditions specified in the policy documents.

There is a wide variation in the length of the lists, some covering as few as eight illnesses and one a staggering 140, but this is a slightly different version, which pays various sums, according to the severity of the condition. Heart disease and cancer head the list on all the policies. Very few policies will cover illness caused by stress or mental problems. Back problems are rarely covered either.

Whilst some people consider critical illness cover essential and enjoy the peace of mind being insured offers them, it is interesting to note that a great many claims are turned down. It is believed that this figure is 20%. The most common reason for this being non-disclosure of a previous illness. Insurance companies are quite entitled to do this and the first thing that will happen, in the event of a claim, is t (more...)

Shipping the Problem Elsewhere

Saturday, July 26th, 2003

I was reading a recent survey that said if given the choice, most people would rather get increased healthcare coverage than a pay raise. We in the industry know it s a mess and that many people delay getting treatment for fear of depleting their savings. The current state of healthcare in America can literally be deadly.

Which is why I wasn t surprised to read an article that stated many patients are now going overseas for their healthcare. Get a load of this:

“Carl Garrett of Leicester, N.C., will fly to a state-of-the-art New Delhi hospital in September for surgeries to remove gallstones and to fix an overworn rotator cuff. His employer, Blue Ridge Paper Products Inc. of Canton, N.C., will pay for it all, including airfare for Garrett and his fiancee. The company also will give Garrett a share of the expected savings, up to $10,000, when he returns. “

That s right! We re not only shipping jobs overseas, we re now shipping patients there, too! Of course, if this trend co (more...)
