Blue Cross Insurance - Providing Health Insurance For One Third Of All Americans

Friday, April 30th, 2004

Blue Cross insurance was the creation of Justin Ford Kimball who, in 1929, devised a plan to provide hospital care for school teachers in Dallas. The plan provided teachers with cover for up to twenty one days in hospitalization each year for a premium of six dollars.

From these humble beginnings the plan spread, first throughout Dallas and other areas of Texas and then nationwide, providing cover for employees across an ever widening range of employment.

Just ten years after it was born the Blue Cross symbol was adopted by the American Hospital Association for plans that met certain standards and this formal recognition provided Blue Cross insurance with a springboard for further growth.

In 1960 the growth in popularity of Blue Cross was such that the Blue Cross Association superseded the American Hospital Association commission and some twelve years later severed all ties with the commission.

Finally, in 1982, the Blue Cross Association merged with the National Association of (more...)

Understanding COBRA Health Insurance

Friday, April 30th, 2004

COBRA is the acronym for The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act set up in 1985 and this law states that the health insurance cover of an employee will continue for at least 18 months after termination of employment. There are some cases where the limit extends to as much as 29 to 36 months and most companies who have the group insurance scheme are subject to COBRA.

The beneficiaries of COBRA are those people who lose their jobs and because of this law will not simultaneously lose their health insurance cover also. It basically aims at helping them though a rough patch. A terminated employee can buy health insurance for his family if it was done so while he was employed and for himself and this will be at the group rate which is payable by the employer 100% every month with a 2% surcharge. All companies are aware of the rules that apply to their respective employees.

If an eligible employee gets the sack, is laid off or encounters any change in his employment status like reducti (more...)

Disability Allowance: Understanding The Various Clauses

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

It is the duty of a welfare state to take care of its citizens and provide all possible support and relief that they may require from time to time. It applies specifically to those who are socially, culturally, linguistically or physically in disadvantageous position. That s the reason why a special allowance is provided to the disabled in many countries across the globe.

Disability Allowance or Disability Living Allowance is a governmental aid provided to those who fall within the category of the disabled as defined under the relevant law. Broadly speaking, one is entitled to a disability allowance if one suffers from any such disability that makes one incapable of taking proper care of oneself. You may also get the benefit if you have serious difficulty in walking.

However, disability allowance is available only for those who are below the age of 65. Those who are above 65, are only entitled to an Attendance Allowance. The allowance is independent of whether or not you work or have any sav (more...)

The Medicare program is administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) department. In order for you to take advantage of Medicare, and for your physician to accept your coverage, you must both complete a Medicare application.

Medicare coverage and information is subject to change without notice. You should always check with your local Social Security agency before relying solely on this article.

Individual Coverage

Car Insurance

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

There are various aspects to consider when applying for car insurance. Many car insurance agencies will consider age, risk, gender, region, and other issues before making a decision. Generally, in the US a person has to be 18 years of age to get a driver license and car insurance. In most instances, the insurance company will consider age. On the other hand, in some instances age may not affect the policy.

Again, factors such as region and gender can have an effect on your policy. In most instances, insurance companies consider the younger drivers as a higher risk, thus they will increase the rates of premiums. The purpose is to encourage the driver to drive safely to receive lower rates later. Still, car insurance companies may offer a better deal to the driver regardless of age.

Many car insurance companies advertise lower costs to luring the customers in the door. However, regardless of the claims made in the ad slicks the company will still consider risks, region, age, and other factors (more...)
