Finding Low Cost Health Insurance For Children
Most parents know that health insurance for your child is one aspect of ensuring your child s well-being. Making sure that your children s health is well taken care of is a normal responsibility of being a parent. Good health affects the child s ability to develop properly and perform well, not only in school, but in life in general. Regular visits to the doctor for check-ups and normal childhood illnesses are a part of growing up. Unfortunately, we all know how costly health insurance can be. Here are some ways that you can get low cost health insurance for your child that doesn t compromise on necessary medical care.
Go With Group Insurance
If you are employed and your employer provides insurance for you and your family, then it should be relatively easy to add your child to your existing health insurance policy. You would simply inform your insurer upon the birth or adoption of your child and coverage will typically begin immediately, Of course, it will affect your rates, but this will provide you with a much less expensive way to go than private health insurance.
Private Insurance
If you do not have an employer who provides you with health insurance, then you may have to get your own health insurance coverage for your child. No doubt, it will not be nearly as inexpensive as with a group policy, but there are a number of health insurance companies that are much cheaper than others - and will still give you a good level of coverage.
By looking around and doing some comparing of low cost health insurance policies that offer family coverage you should be able to come up with a plan to fit your needs. Compare carefully, though, because policies of equal costs may not at all be offering the same amount of coverage. It is also a good idea to see what they do not cover, too.
One of the easiest ways to keep the cost down is to increase the amount of your deductible. By raising this to a comfortable level - where you are sure you can still pay it if needed, you reduce your monthly premiums.
Another way to ensure that it is a low cost policy is to go with an HMO, as opposed to a fee for service (indemnity) type of plan. An HMO will be less costly, but will also have more restrictions on where and how you can get the needed medical treatment. One way that they will help keep costs down is to provide your child with some preventive health measures such as routine physicals and immunizations.
Other Programs
For low- to very-low income families, the Medicaid program is often the only alternative. But for many moderate income families, Medicaid is not an available option. If you find that regular health insurance programs for covering children are still beyond your budget, then there may be a couple of other ways to go. One of these is the insurance program for children that most states now have. These programs are geared towards working families who can t afford the premiums for private insurance but are not income-eligible for other low-cost programs. Even though the choices may not be optimal, you can still rest assured that your children will receive proper medical attention whenever needed. These programs go by different names in each state so you will have to do a little research to find them. Frequently, your local public school, library or a pediatrician s office can provide you with information regarding these types of programs.
